The Challenge

Ports and port facilities are assets that form a critical part of the infrastructure for many economies. Maritime facilities, whether on or offshore, present very real terrorist targets.

Ensuring the security of ships and port facilities involves intense risk management activity. To determine which security measures are appropriate, an assessment of the risks must be made in each particular case.

Security measures must be able to determine what cargo and which individuals are on the ships, and where they are at all times; Security measures must be smart enough to assess and counteract terror threats, yet intelligently planned so they do not interfere with business objectives. Bringing about strict security measures that slow down the transfer of goods and people will only serve to harm maritime business operations. The objective of security measures must be to protect the core infrastructure of business operations.
